Mike: I wrote the guitar part for this song while trying to remember how to play a song I wrote when I was a teenager. I kept playing part of it wrong, but realized that I liked the wrong part better, and formed the song around that.

I had an idea to write lyrics loosely based on a short story I'd written, so I sent it along with the guitar part to Matt to see if he could find a way to make it work. What he came back with was "Cardboard Heart".

Matt: Mike sent me a short story about incomplete collections: Bottle caps, Handi-wipes from restaurants and balls of random pieces string. Like those pieces of string, eventually these incomplete collections built up to a collection itself. Then after a while, they go unnoticed and eventually are thrown away.

And even after you grow up, there's a collection everyone keeps hidden away in dusty old cardboard boxes: Lost Love.
