Mike: I had a Great Aunt Grace ("Grace" was her middle name, her actual name was "Mercy") who developed dementia in her old age. She would call our house to speak to my father, but when I'd tell her he was out, she'd ask me if I could tell her which of her brothers and sisters were still alive so she could call or write to them. She didn't remember that they had all died. I'd have to tell her that they were all gone and she wouldn't be able to talk to them. Ten minutes later she'd call and ask the same thing all over again. It was this constant cycle of breaking bad news to her over and over. I wrote the first verse to the song a little while after she died.
